An investigation has been launched after a Stena Line employee died at Cairnryan Port on Tuesday morning.

It happened at around 7.15am, with emergency services being called to the port following reports that the man, aged in his 60s, had entered the water.

The ferry company said the man entered the water from the shore at the Loch Ryan Port.

He was recovered from the water but later died from his injuries.

“Stena Line can confirm that an incident occurred this morning (23 July) at approx. 07:15 hrs when a port employee entered the water at Loch Ryan Port from the shore,” a spokesperson said.

“The man was recovered from the water and emergency services attended the scene. Police Scotland have since confirmed that our colleague has sadly passed away.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of our colleague. We are supporting our staff at this upsetting time.

“The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated by the authorities and Stena Line is cooperating fully with the investigation.”

Police Scotland said they are not treating the death of the man as suspicious.

“Around 7.30am on Tuesday, 23 July, 2024, we were called to a report of a man in the water at Belfast Way, Cairnryan,” a statement said.

“Emergency services attended and a 60-year-old man was recovered from the water.

“He died a short time later. Enquiries are ongoing but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances. Health and Safety Executive will be notified in due course.”

The 3.30pm sailing from Belfast has been cancelled, with the ferry operator advising that other services will be subject to delays.
