Police are continuing to investigate the “extremely shocking” discovery of a woman’s body at a Co Down beach.

The body was reported at the beach at Seafront Road in the Cultra area on Monday morning.

The beach lies on the south side of Belfast Lough, and the area along with part of the Seafront Road was cordoned off for a time as police examined the area, before being reopened in the afternoon.

A PSNI spokesperson said police were “examining the circumstances surrounding the death” of the woman, and said on Tuesday evening: “There are no further details at present.”

Alliance MLA for North Down, Connie Egan, said in a post to the X platform on Monday: “The news that a body has been found on the beach at Cultra is saddening and extremely shocking.

“My thoughts are with the family and loved ones at this difficult time. If you have any information that may assist investigations, please contact the PSNI.”

Her party colleague and fellow North Down MLA, Andrew Muir, said he was “shocked and saddened” by the news.

“My thoughts are with the family and loved ones at this distressing time,” he said in an X post.

Another MLA for the area, the UUP’s Stephen Dunne, wrote in a X post: “Very sad and shocking news that a body has been found on a beach in Cultra.

“The local community is naturally concerned, but we must allow the local PSNI to carry out its investigations.”
