Irish Open: What’s on offer in Newcastle away from the golfing competition?

A number of ‘fringe’ events will take place in the seaside town while the competition takes place at Royal County Down

Newcastle is preparing to welcome some of the world’s leading golfers and tens of thousands of spectators to the Irish Open next week.

It’s almost tee time for the prestigious event, which will take place at Royal County Down for the first time in nearly a decade.

And with visitors from across the island of Ireland and further afield due to descend on the seaside town, a number of ‘fringe’ events are also planned away from the golf.

The celebrations begin this weekend in Newcastle with the Eats and Beats Festival, described as a “paradise for foodies and music lovers alike”.

Taking place on Saturday and Sunday, visitors will be able to sample produce from an array of chefs and local food producers, while there will be live music performances at Donard Park.

Cookery demonstrations from TV chef Jenny Bristow and Great British Menu chefs Paul Cunningham and Melissa McCabe, who represented Northern Ireland on Great British Menu in 2021 and 2024, will also take place.

Other events set to run from September 13 to 15 include a pop-up food village, located along Newcastle Promenade at the rear of the Newcastle Centre, with visitors able to indulge in everything from gourmet street food to traditional local dishes.

There’s also the Newcastle Food and Drink Tour. Led by Mairead Sweeney, it takes place on September 14 and will take participants on a journey through the town.

And for those golf enthusiasts not attending Royal County Down, there will be the opportunity to watch all the live action as it unfolds on the big screen, located at the rear of the Newcastle Centre.

Newcastle Restaurant Weekend also takes place from September 11 to 15 with local restaurants, cafes and bars offering exclusive menus, special deals, and mouth-watering dishes crafted from the finest ingredients.

Pete Byrne, chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down district council, said visitors will be able to enjoy numerous events in the town.

“With so much to see, taste, and do, the programme of ‘fringe events’ is set to be an unforgettable addition to this prestigious golf tournament,” she said.

“Whether you are here for the golf, the food, or simply to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, we warmly welcome you to be part of this fantastic weekend of events.”
