James McClean involved in crash en route to training

Footballer James McClean was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Wrexham as he made his way to training on Wednesday morning.

The Welsh club confirmed that a first-team player had been involved in an accident and will undergo medical checks.

It is believed that the 35-year-old Derry man, who is the club’s captain, was the player involved.

Conditions in Wrexham were reported to have been icy and foggy on Wednesday morning.

An image shared online claims to show the former Derry City player’s black Audi being towed away from the scene.

In a statement, the club said: “Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning on his way to training.”

“It was a single car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene.

“The player reported to the club this morning and will undergo further medical checks.”

Local police said that they responded to a road traffic collision near Wrexham Golf Club just before 9am.



“Officers and colleagues from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident, which had blocked the road until the vehicle was recovered shortly before 10am,” a spokesperson said.

“No serious injuries were reported from the scene.”

League One side Wrexham AFC are due to play Birmingham City on Thursday.
