Joe Brolly has recalled a run-in with one of the Gallagher brothers during a backstage appearance in which the Oasis band member turned down an autograph request.
The pair had met following appearances on the Late Late Show, when Brolly says the Gallagher brother’s security team said he would need to write in for permission after requesting a signature for his daughter.
Speaking on his Free State podcast, the ex GAA pundit told co-presenter Dion Fanning he wouldn’t watch the band in his back garden after the fanfare of the brothers’ reunion last week.
“I would not go out into the back garden, those two wee small boys, who have only got one song and they repeated the same song over and over and over,” Brolly says of the band.
“Our Maeve said to us one time, she said ‘oh would you get his autograph’. I don’t know which of the wee ones was on. He was a wee tiny person.
“Anyway, he was on first and he came out and I said ‘oh how you doing, my daughter would love your autograph’. I was with Pat Shortt and he didn’t even speak to me, so great a person that he is, and his security says ‘sorry mate you have to write in for permission to get autographs.
“And I says ‘go and f*** yourself you wee s**** and calling yourself Irish and calling yourself from Mayo, what the hell is wrong with you?”
“You call yourself Irish. Come up to Mayo and behave like that and see how long you get on.”
The former Derry player said the hysteria over the band’s reunion was an example of how people are “easily manipulated”.
He said: “But anyway, the idea that you would, that anybody would be interested in that.... I’ll tell you what it is, it’s like a cult thing. People are so easily manipulated.”
