The Kneecap movie has earned the biggest Irish box office weekend opening ever for an Irish language film.

The critically acclaimed film, which tells the semi-fictional story of the Belfast hip-hop trio’s rise to fame, opened at number 3 in the Irish box office listings, taking in around €292,000 across the island of Ireland.

The movie, which is directed by Rich Peppiatt and also stars Michael Fassbender, was beaten by Marvel Studios blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine and the hit adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel It Ends With Us.

It was the biggest weekend opening for any homegrown film at the Irish box office since 2022′s Oscar-nominated The Banshees of Inisherin, directed by Martin McDonagh.

Kneecap, which stars the band’s Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí as themselves, had the widest ever opening for an Irish film on the island of Ireland, on 109 screens.

The film, which was produced by Trevor Birney and Jack Tarling for Fine Point Films and Mother Tongues Films, will open across the rest of the UK on August 23.

It has been chosen as Ireland’s entry for the Oscars’ International Feature Film category next year, and has already won plaudits including three titles at the Galway Film Fleadh.

Following the film’s world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the US back in January, it was named winner of the prestigious festival’s NEXT Audience Award.
