The Department for Communities has approved the business case for the long-awaited Strabane Town Centre Public Realm Scheme – estimated to cost about £7 million.
Planning permission for the regeneration scheme was granted in April 2020.
While the majority of the funding will come from the department, Derry City and Strabane District Council will contribute £700,000.
The scheme will result in significant environmental improvements in the Abercorn Square, Mark Street, Castle Street and Railway Street areas of the Tyrone town.

The council’s director of environment and regeneration said it would deliver extensive improvements to footpaths, installation of new street lighting, additional tree planting, improved parking provision, improved traffic flow, an improved pedestrian experience and the installation of public artwork.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Lilian Seeoni-Barr said the scheme would “stimulate the regeneration of the town centre as a destination”.
