A 33-year old Co Armagh man accused of taking images of the vehicles of police officers is to stand trial on two terrorist offences later this year, a court has heard.

Samuel McCaughey, from Kilwilke Road in Lurgan, has been charged with two charges brought under the Terrorism Act 2000.

He appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Monday where he was charged that on May 27, 2020 at Lurgan PSNI station, he recorded information likely to be useful to a terrorist, namely “details of certain vehicles situated at Lurgan PSNI station”.

When asked how he pleaded, McCaughey replied “not guilty”.

He was also charged that on the same date, he published information about two people ‘who are, or have been, members of His Majesty’s Forces’ - namely vehicle details of two individuals who are members of the PSNI - which was likely to be useful to a terrorist.

McCaughey denied this second charge.

Following the arraignment, a Crown barrister told Mr Justice Fowler that the trial is likely to last no longer than one week.

McCaughey’s barrister then informed the senior judge that the charges related to allegations that centre on the accused making a recording on his mobile phone whilst he was in the car park at Lurgan police station.

Mr Justice Fowler then set the date for the trial as September 16.
