A MAN has appeared before a special court sitting following the seizure of an estimated £100,000 in drugs in Derry.

Michael Joseph Cassidy from Grainan Park in the city is charged with possessing, intending to supply and being concerned in the supply of cocaine as well as possessing cannabis and criminal property.

It is further alleged he drove while unfit through drink or drugs and was in possession of a quantity of fireworks and a prohibited weapon namely a stun gun.

A police officer told Dungannon Magistrates Court on Friday the charges could be connected.

While no details surrounding the circumstances of the alleged offending were disclosed during the short hearing, the charges relate to the seizure of suspected Class A controlled drugs with an estimated potential street value of £100,000 on 10 July in the Strand Road area.

A co-suspect is currently being sought and on this basis a defence solicitor told the court Cassidy has been informed, “it would not be suitable to seek bail while that remains the position”.

Describing this approach as “pragmatic” District Judge Michael Ranaghan remanded Cassidy in custody to appear again by video-link at Derry Magistrates Court on 8 August.
