The death of a pedestrian in a road traffic incident on the outskirts of Letterkenny in Co Donegal brings to 53 the number of people killed on the Republic’s roads since the start of the year.
The man, who was in his 30s, was struck by a lorry on the outskirts of Letterkenny just before 6am on Friday. The incident occurred at Magheranan on the main road between Letterkenny and Ramelton.
The death was the second on the Republic’s roads within 48 hours. A man, aged in his 40s, died in a multi-car collision at Kilcock, Co Kildare on Wednesday night. So far this year, 53 people have died on the Republic’s roads while there have been ten road fatalities in the north.
A Garda spokesman said the Letterkenny-Ramelton road remained closed pending a technical examination.
The spokesman said: “The pedestrian, a male in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been removed to the mortuary in University Hospital Letterkenny where a post mortem will take place in due course. The lorry driver was uninjured.”
Letterkenny Sinn Féin councillor Gerry McMonagle said his immediate thoughts were with the family of the victim.
“My heart goes out to the family having to deal with this news. I would urge everyone, drivers and pedestrians, to always be mindful and careful when using the roads. We all have a role to play in making our roads safer,” Mr McMonagle said.
