A man is to stand trial on charges connected to the seizure of guns in north Belfast.

Mark Waller, 36, is accused of having pistols and a double-barrelled shotgun located during police searches three years ago.

He also allegedly collected information likely to be of use to terrorists - referred to in the charges as documents on firearms, explosives and chapters from the Al-Qaeda handbook.

Waller, previously of Crumlin Road in the city, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for a preliminary enquiry into the case against him.

He faces eight counts linked to seizures made back on May 2, 2021.

The charges include possessing firearms or imitation firearms with intent to cause fear of violence, without a certificate and in suspicious circumstances.

It is alleged that he had a 12-bore shortened shotgun, handguns, a 9mm blank calibre gas-powered pistol and magazine.

Waller is further accused of criminal damage to a Housing Executive property and possessing a prohibited air pistol.

The suspected weapons and ammunition were recovered following reports that shots had been discharged at locations in the city.

Previous courts were told Waller denies opening fire or any intent to cause fear to anyone.

No further details were disclosed during Tuesdays brief hearing.

Granting the prosecution’s application, District Judge Steven Keown returned Waller for trial at Belfast Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

The defendant remains on bail at an alternative address outside Belfast, under conditions which include a ban on entering the Ballysillan area of the city.
