Two men have appeared in court charged in connection with an incident at Portballintrae Boat Club last month.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court, Derek Leonard McKendry (62) and 63-year-old Stephen Cross confirmed their identities and that they understood the charges against them.

McKendry whose address was listed as Quarry Road, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone, was accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and using disorderly behaviour in a public place, namely Portballintrae Boat Club on June 3.

Cross, from the Castlecat Road in Bushmills, faces charges of common assault of another alleged victim, stealing his mobile phone worth around £300 and using disorderly behaviour on the same date.

None of the alleged facts surrounding the charges were opened in court.

At the time, police said the fight broke out over a flag on a boat. The boat was later extensively damaged in a fire.

District Judge Peter King, who described the charges as “significant,” fixed conditional bail of £500 for each defendant and adjourned the case until August 5 for a prosecution update.

Both defendants were told that they would be excused from attending that hearing.
