Met Office issues heavy rain warning for Northern Ireland

A weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for parts on Northern Ireland overnight.

The Met Office has warned it may bring some disruption to the south east.

The yellow warning comes into place at midnight covering counties Armagh and Down and will remain in place until 6am on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the forecaster said: “Rain is expected to push north across much of Northern Ireland during Tuesday evening and overnight, clearing from the south on Wednesday morning.

“The heaviest rain is likely to be across southeastern areas, where 20-30 mm is likely widely. Some high ground of South Armagh and South Down, and particularly the Mournes, could see 50-80 mm.”

People are advised to check if their properties could be at risk of flooding and to consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

There is also a “small chance of interruption to power supplies” and other services.

Spray and flooding on roads could also lead to longer journey times with road users asked to check the road conditions if driving and amend their travel plans if necessary.

Temperatures are set to rise on Wednesday with highs of 17C feeling very mild for mid October.

Sunny spells and showers are forecast for Thursday followed by “changeable and unsettled” weather for Friday and the weekend with bands of rain moving east and strong winds at times.
