A new foot and cycle bridge has been put in place along the banks of the River Foyle in Derry.
The 63m bridge was set in place across the Penny Burn stream at its inlet into the River Foyle close to the Fort George site.
The £2 million structure is a crucial part of a new greenway link connecting the River Foyle walkway to the city’s Bay Road Park which is expected to open to the public later this year.
The sections of the bridge were assembled on the river bank over the last week and a huge crane and floodlights were put in place at the site at the weekend.
The bridge and greenway are expected to complement future development at the former Fort George British army barracks. The Special EU Programmes’ Body (SEUPB) said the bridge would be part of a cross border greenway trail from Derry into Co Donegal.
SEUPB chief executive, Gina McIntyre said: “This exciting project will see the creation of a 46.5km greenway which will enhance accessibility between schools, businesses, parks and residential areas and make cycling and walking more attractive commuting options for everyone.”
Pennyburn FootbridgeSome great drone footage of the works taking place at the Pennyburn Footbridge. The Pennyburn Footbridge is progressing well and the structure is on target to be completed in Spring. This will be a fantastic addition to the already beautiful walking route and we are looking forward to seeing it completed.
