Newry’s very own ‘Black Santa’ is preparing to complete his 33rd consecutive Christmas sit-out at the age of 83 to raise vital funds for the Southern Area Hospice.
John Dalzell is meeting his vow to carry out the fundraising “every Christmas for as long as I’m able”, having set up his trailer in the town’s Hill Street, from where he collects donations from the public.
In his recognisable red fleece and black hat, John has been a part of the festive season for the Hospice since 1992, when he began his annual campaign.
Last year he raised an incredible £126,000, and plans to raise another huge sum again with the help of his team, who will assist him throughout the 10-day sit-out.
His annual campaign started on December 14, and on Saturday he celebrated his 83rd birthday while carryout out his collection work.
“This year, I am sad to say, I have suffered some ill-health, however, I’m as determined as ever to take part in the sit-out,” he said.
“The sit-out is a huge team effort and we are working hard in preparation to ensure its continued success.”
Hospice fundraising officer James McCaffrey said: “I have known John for over 10 years now and it is no surprise to me that he is determined to continue with his wonderful sit-out for yet another year.
John and his dedicated team are an incredible example of the spirit of giving at Christmas. The amount of time and effort they put into this collection for Southern Area Hospice each year is truly amazing, and it is an honour to work alongside them.”
