Newtownbutler security alert ends following controlled explosion

The alert began following the discovery of a suspicious object on Monday afternoon

A three-day security alert in Newtownbutler ended on Sunday, while another alert in Banbridge, Co Down, led to homes being evacuated on Saturday.
Cordons have been lifted in Newtownbutler following a security alert that began on Monday.

A security alert in Co Fermanagh has ended after a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious object.

The alert began shortly after noon on Monday following a report of an object in the Drumcru Road area of Newtownbutler.

Several cordons were placed in the area as the investigation got underway, and drivers and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area.

PSNI Superintendent Robert McGowan said cordons that had been placed at Drumcru Road, Bun Road and Crom Road have now been lifted and all roads had reopened.

“A device discovered in the area has now been removed for further examination after Ammunition Technical Officers carried out a controlled explosion on the object,” he said.

”I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as a public safety operation was carried out overnight and into today.

”I understand the disruption this can cause, however, our primary aim throughout the course of this operation was to keep our community safe, and I would like to thank our partner agencies for their support with this.”

He added: ”Our enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information which could assist our investigation or noticed anything suspicious in the Drumcru Road area in recent days, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 616 29/01/24.”
