Belfast’s oldest pizza restaurant is to close its doors after more than four decades of trading.
Capers Pizzeria, located on the Upper Newtownards Road, will shut permanently after its last day of trading on St Patrick’s Day.
The restaurant was originally located on Belfast’s ‘Golden Mile’ at Great Victoria Street, first opening at the central location in 1982 at the height of the Troubles.
It was the first pizza restaurant in the city, bringing the staple Italian dish to curious diners and prompting a later flood of rivals, from independent takeaways to world-famous chains.
Owned by business partners Willie Marshal and Mike Lyle, three more Capers outlets opened in the city, with one in Bradbury Place and another in Stranmillis Road eventually closing along with the original Great Victoria Street restaurant, leaving just the east Belfast eatery available for loyal diners.
In 2022 it was revealed the restaurant was up for sale.
However, in a post to social media on Thursday, Mr Marshal and Mr Lyle announced the end of an era for the restaurant name.
“It is official...Capers last day will be this Sunday 17th March 2024. Normal opening hours apply (5-9pm) or while stocks last,” they said.

“After 42 years in business the time has come for us to hang up our aprons and retire. We would like to thank our customers, families, friends, staff and suppliers for all your support over the last 4 decades! The place wouldn’t be what it is without you and we are so grateful. All the best, Willie and Mike.”
