Orange fever is sweeping across The Orchard County as Armagh gears up for the All-Ireland final against Galway this weekend.

It’s been over two decades since the team lifted the Sam Maguire in 2002, and fans were out in force in Pearse Og Park in Armagh City on Wednesday evening to show their support ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Galway.

It was one of several events held across the county this week as excitement reaches a peak before the whole of Armagh heads for Croke Park - those that can get their hands on a ticket at least.

If the team is successful in their bid for the cup, it will be the first time 13 year old Darragh Mallon has witnessed his team win the Sam Maguire.

He told The Irish News he thinks they have a good team and is confident of them winning.

“I think they could win 2-13 to 1-13. We’re strong on the ball and strong in the counter attack. We do a few wee fist passes from the back but when we get to the wings we cut in well and just put it back.

“If Armagh win I will be absolutely bouncing.”

Kevin Morgan from Galway is in Armagh with a stall selling flags, hats and bunting.

He said there has been a great atmosphere in the city.

“There is a real buzz around Armagh the last few days people are getting behind their team.

“You walk through the town you can see the bunting and the sea of orange the community is really rallying behind their team ahead of the final.

“I’m hoping we get the Sam Maguire back to Galway. I believe Galway are going to win by three points.”

Tens of thousands of fans are set to travel to Croke Park for the showdown with the ticket hunt well underway.

Fans have been showing their support with a wave of orange painting buildings and even sheep.

Tyrone woman Mairead Mc Cahey said all the North seem to be behind them.

“I’m a Tyrone supporter but I’m wishing Armagh well for Sunday.

“It’s great to see the atmosphere building around the town. Its great to have another Ulster county in the final.”
