Passenger on scrambler bike dies days after collision with car in Lurgan

The 27-year-old was fatally injured in the collision on a roundabout on Thursday afternoon

A passenger on a scrambler bike died on Sunday days after he suffered catastrophic injuries in a collision with a car at a roundabout in Lurgan.

The 27-year-old man, believed to be originally from Belfast, suffered the injuries in the crash in the Lake Street area of the Co Armagh town around 3.30pm on Thursday.

A second man, the driver of the scrambler, suffered serious injuries when the bike collided with an Audi A3 Sport TDI. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries.

Sinn Féin councillor Keith Haughian expressed condolences following the death of the young man in north Lurgan.

Mr Haughian said: “It is tragic news to learn that a man has died following a collision on Lake Street on Thursday.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this man, the unimaginable loss of someone this young is so sad and tragic.

“I want to pay tribute to the emergency services for all of their efforts at the scene.”

“The passenger of the scrambler, a man aged in his twenties, was taken to hospital for treatment to life-threatening injuries. Sadly, he later passed away,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

The driver of the scrambler suffered serious injuries and remained in hospital on Sunday evening. The driver of the car sustained minor injuries.

“Our investigation is underway, and we are continuing to appeal to anyone who might have any information which might assist, or any dash-cam or other footage, to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 963 15/08/24,” the spokesperson said.

Three emergency ambulance crews, two rapid response paramedics, an advanced paramedic and the charity Air Ambulance Northern Ireland were at the crash scene, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said.

“One person was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital by ambulance and another person was taken to Craigavon Area Hospital by ambulance,” a NIAS spokesperson said.
