Strabane’s hurling club has extended its condolences to the family and friends of former IRA member Pearse McCauley following his death on Monday.
Garda killer McCauley (59) was back living in the west Tyrone town after being released from prison after serving seven years for the 2014 assault and stabbing of his wife Pauline Tully, now a Sinn Fein TD for Cavan-Monaghan TD.
In a post on social media, Strabane Shamrocks said the committee, members and players “wish to offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Pearse McCauley following his recent passing”.
The club added: “The McCauley family have been steeped in Shamrocks history with quite a few holding committee positions, playing and being involved with the club for its betterment.
“Pearse was also the partner of Mary who, along with her family, are great supporters and members of our club.”
McCauley, one of the killers of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe, once a highly regarded member of the IRA, will be buried on Thursday following a funeral service in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Strabane.
His death notice said he was the father of Pearse and Eoghan, dearly loved son of the late Pearse and Sheila and much loved brother of Nancy, Siobhan, Patricia, Míchéal and the late Fionnuala, Thomas, Seamus and Maura
McCauley lived quietly in Strabane following his release from Castlerea Prison in Roscommon in June 2022.
He made no public appearances, and did not attend any Sinn Féin or republican-organised events. Sinn Féin locally nor nationally has made any comment on his death by early afternoon Wednesday.
