Police are trying to determine a motive after a suspected stabbing in south Belfast left two men hospitalised on Saturday night.

The two men were taken to hospital, with one of the individuals “requiring extensive surgery”, according to the police.

Officers were alerted to the incident in the Fitzroy Avenue area of the city after 8pm.

“On arrival, two men were located injured outside the property,” a police spokesman said.

“One of the men had sustained a wound to his leg and hand, whilst the other man had a serious injury to his calf.”

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Police have confirmed that he remains in custody as their investigation continues “to determine exactly what happened and a motive”.

They are calling on anyone with any information to contact the police on 101, quoting reference number 1626 03/08/24.
