COLLEAGUES of a hospital worker who died suddenly in Belfast on Tuesday have paid tribute to a “gentleman” who was dedicated to patient care.

Police had responded to the sudden death in the Distillery Street area near Royal Victoria Hospital on Tuesday, with assistance from Community Rescue volunteers, which was later confirmed to be Brian ‘Bap’ McCusker.

Members of the UNISON RVH and Muckamore branch committee said they were “devastated at the news of the passing of our dear comrade.”

“Brian was a passionate dog lover and Man Utd fan. All have described Bap as a gentleman and someone always willing to help, Bap would regularly attend UNISON demos and picket lines,” the group said.

“Bap played a key role in the delivery of patient care, he took his role seriously in the delivery and picking up of blood products throughout the hospital.”

Adding that he was “very much respected by all professions and disciplines across the RVH,” with nearly 30 years of service, his colleagues expressed their “condolences, love and solidarity to Bap’s wonderful and very well respected family” at their devastating loss.

“All of us working in the hospital have gone through very hard times, individually and collectively, however looking after yourself doesn’t make sense if we’re not looking after each other.”

All members have been asked to attend Mr McCusker’s funeral Mass, with details to follow.

Among many others sharing their own tributes, one wrote “the corridors of the Royal will not be the same. Deepest sympathy to all of Baps family.”

On Tuesday evening, Community Rescue Service in Belfast commented: “We regret to inform you that this afternoon one of our teams located a body believed to be that of the missing person.

“The management and volunteers of the Community Rescue Service extend our prayers and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.”
