A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the sudden death of a pensioner in Derry.

The body of Noel O’Sullivan, a retired orthodontist who was in his 80s and from a well-known family in the city, was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in the Culmore Road area.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out on Friday to determine the cause of death.

The man who was detained remained in police custody on Thursday evening.

Ballyarnett Sinn Féin councillor Sandra Duffy said the whole community was in “shock”.

The former mayor said: “The local community is shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of a man on the Culmore Road.

“My immediate thoughts are with this man’s family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.”

SDLP councillor Catherine McDaid said the community was “in shock” following the incident and passed her condolences to the man’s family.

She added: “It’s absolutely terrible, it’s devastating, the whole community is in shock and our thoughts go out to the family of the man.”
