There were warm congratulations from politicians from across the political divide following Armagh’s second ever All-Ireland win on Sunday.

After a tense finish to the game, Armagh ran out one point winners over Galway in Croke Park, sparking scenes of jubilation across the county.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill led the congratulations to the Orchardmen, despite hailing from neighbouring county and fierce rivals Tyrone.

“Comhghairdeas to the players, staff and fans on a fantastic victory. Enjoy the celebrations!,” the first minister tweeted.

DUP Communities Minister Gordon Lyons was also on hand to offer congratulations.

“Congratulations to Armagh on winning the All-Ireland Championship for only the second time in history,” he said in a statement.

“This is a great achievement for all involved with the orchard county and I am sure they will enjoy the well-deserved celebrations as will their supporters who have waited over 20 years for this moment.”

Taoiseach Simon Harris said it was a ‘privilege’ to watch his first All-Ireland Football Final in Croke Park.

“What a battle and what an incredible finish,” he said.

“It was a privilege to witness this decider and those heart-stopping final minutes. I predict some homecoming for Sam this year. Congratulations Armagh and commiserations to Galway.”

NI Secretary of State Hilary Benn also commended Armagh, posting on X: “Many congratulations to Armagh on their victory.”

Meanwhile, SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colm Eastwood has submitted a motion at the House of Commons in Westminster to congratulate the Armagh team.

He said the Early Day Motion was to show support for the players, coaches and fans who “can be rightly proud of an enormous achievement”.

“The GAA is overwhelmingly a force for enormous good in our society and brings neighbours together,” he added.
