PSNI examining circumstances of ‘heartbreaking’ death of toddler in west Belfast

Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a toddler in west Belfast on Thursday.

A three-year-old boy is understood to have died following a tragic incident at a property on the Springfield Road area.

Local residents in the area told of their shock on Thursday after news of the tragic incident.

In an update from the PSNI on Friday morning, they said a post-mortem was due to be carried out.

“Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of a child at a property on Springfield Road in West Belfast on Thursday 10 October,” a PSNI spokesperson said.”A post mortem examination will be carried out in due course. There are no further details.”

Sinn Féin West Belfast MP Paul Maskey described the young boy’s death as “heartbreaking”.



“It is absolutely heartbreaking that police have now confirmed they are examining the circumstances of the death of a young child at a property in west Belfast on Thursday.

“This is absolutely tragic and I would like to express my deepest condolences with the family at such a difficult time.”

SDLP councillor Paul Doherty said the thoughts of the local community in west Belfast are with the family of the young boy.

“Really tragic news of the sudden death of a child in the Springfield Road area of West Belfast today. This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” Cllr Doherty said.

“The thoughts of the whole community are with the family at this very difficult time.”
