A serving PSNI officer is facing a number of charges relating to the alleged harassment of a man in matters dating back two years.

Ruari White (51), with an address given as PSNI Headquarters in Belfast, is accused of pursuing a course of conduct amounting to harassment as well as persistently using a public electronic communications network to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety.

The offending is alleged to have occurred on dates between November 14 and December 11 2022.

No details surrounding the circumstances of the case were disclosed during a short hearing at Newry Magistrates Court, nor was there any indication as to why it had taken so long to prosecute.

A defence lawyer requested some time in order to consult fully with White as to how he intends to plead.

District Judge Eamonn King agreed and listed the case for mention on January 3.

When the PSNI was asked to clarify White’s current employment status, a spokesperson replied: “The officer is suspended pending the outcome of criminal and misconduct proceedings. Until all of these proceedings have concluded, we will be making no further comment.”
