A search is on for a Golden Eagle that escaped from his Co Antrim aviary following damage caused by Storm Darragh.
Loki, the pride and joy of owners Jo Robinson and David Trenier, managed to escape after being moved from his own aviary following last weekend’s storm.
The couple, who run Hawk Walks in Magheramorne outside Ballyclare, have appealed to anyone with information to make contact.
“Our pride and joy Loki the Golden Eagle has escaped his mews,” the couple wrote on social media.
“Due to storm damage over the weekend he was placed in a part time aviary which he has broken through.”
The aviary he was placed would normally home hawks so was less secure than Loki’s own.
The couple added: “Our hearts are broken…he will hopefully not travel too far.” They used thermal imaging equipment during frantic searches over the last number of days.
“We recognise that the general public will possibly see buzzards as possible sightings but this bird is huge in comparison with a 6ft wingspan and long braided jesses will be seen from his legs.”
They warned people not to approach as he is wary of strangers. Possible areas of interest are Magheramorne, Glynn, Larne, Ballycarry, Whitehead and Carrickfergus area.
The only definitive sighting of Loki was over Blue Circle Cruising & Sailing Club in Magheramorne.
The couple added: “Please help us bring him home safe. I also ask that no one comments.... ‘better off free’ as these comments will not help our situation in the fact he is a captive bred eagle.
“He will be in danger of not surviving on his own. Please respect that he is a family member and we are in deep panic at the loss of such.”
