Significant traffic disruption was reported in west Belfast and the city centre on Thursday and will continue into Friday due to the closure of the Grosvenor Road to facilitate NIE works.

The busy road and its offslip from the Westlink was closed on Wednesday night as ‘emergency repair works’ are carried out.

Long traffic queues were reported on the Westlink and from west Belfast in the direction of the city centre while the closure was in place on Thursday.

The roadworks have added to traffic disruption in the area caused by the construction of the new Grand Central station, although Translink have said the NIE works are unrelated to the new development.

NIE Networks said the damage to electrical cables was caused by a ‘third party’, and would continue until Friday afternoon.

“Due to third-party damage on the Grosvenor Road Belfast, NIE Networks have to carry out emergency repair works,” a statement said.

“The works commenced on Wednesday 24 July at 8pm and will finish at 4pm on Friday 26 July. Unfortunately, this involved the closure of the Grosvenor Road Belfast between Durham Street and Stanley Street for this time period.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and we ask that you follow the diversions that are in place.”
