Holidaymakers will be hit with a “six drink rule” in parts of Spain as all-inclusive resorts crack down on excessive drinking.

Spain remains a top holiday destination for Irish tourists, with thousands planning to travel there over the coming months to enjoy some winter sun.

However, guests are being advised that they will be limited to six alcoholic beverages distributed evenly with three at lunch and three at dinner.

Some hotels may allow guests to purchase extra drinks and there is no limit on non alcoholic beverages.

The rule applies to Magaluf in Majorca, Playa de Palma in Majorca, El Arenal in Majorca, and San Antonio in Ibiza.

The regulations, first introduced in 2020, have been ramped up this year.

Beyond the drink limit, the sale of alcohol in shops is banned between 9:30pm and 8am.

Activities promoting heavy drinking, such as pub crawls and happy hours, are also prohibited. Advertising for party boats is restricted, and new licenses for such excursions will not be issued.

There will also be new no-drinking zones implemented in the resorts.

Those caught drinking in a way that “disrupts coexistence, involves crowds or deteriorates the tranquility of the environment” could face hefty fines up to €1,500.

Public drinking is also banned in major cities like Barcelona and Madrid, with fines of up to €600.

A spokesperson from ABTA, the leading association of travel agents and tour operators, said: “ABTA will continue to engage with the Balearic Islands Government, ABTA Members and other parties, to encourage clear communication and exchange of information, in order to ensure holidaymakers travelling to hotels in the designated areas enjoy a positive customer experience.”
