SSE Airtricity has announced a 6.3% electricity price cut for domestic customers in the north, which will take effect from the beginning of March.
The reduction is the second in recent months announced by the company, which supplies around 141,000 households in the north, and will see customers save up to £74.59 annually
It follows a 7% slash in November by SSE Airtricity, which is the north’s second largest energy supplier.
Following the reduction by their rival, the north’s third largest energy supplier, Budget Energy, announced an 8% price cut that took effect on December 1.
The latest reduction by SSE Airtricity will automatically be applied to bills from March 1.
Earlier this month, the Consumer Council’s director of infrastructure and sustainability, Peter McClenaghan, warned that despite the reductions, “energy bills remain high for consumers”, and there would be no support relief this year following last winter’s £600 payments to households through the UK government’s Energy Price Guarantee scheme.
SSE Airtricity managing director Klair Neenan said: “We’re acutely aware of the pressure people have been experiencing, while wholesale market prices have remained significantly higher than the pre-pandemic norm.
“Market volatility has impacted households over the past number of years, and we want to assure customers that we will continue to pass savings back to them as soon as it is possible to do so.
“We are here to help, and we urge customers experiencing difficulty to contact us in confidence – we will work with them to find a solution.”
