‘Suspicious object’ sparks security alert in Newtownbutler

Part of the High Bangor Road in Donaghadee remained closed on Thursday night following a serious one-vehicle crash.
Cordons have been placed in the Drumcru Road area of Newtownbutler.

A security alert is ongoing in Co Fermanagh following the discovery of a “suspicious object”.

The object was found in the Drumcru Road area of Newtownbutler on Monday afternoon.

A PSNI spokesperson said officers are at the scene, adding: “A number of cordons are in place on Drumcru Road, Bun Road and Crom Road, please avoid the area.”

Fermanagh and South Tyrone DUP MLA Deborah Erskine said in a social media post: “I’m thinking of those living in the area and the Police dealing with the incident. I thank the PSNI for their quick action. If this is a viable or elaborate hoax, then those responsible must face the full force of the law.”

Fermanagh and Omagh Sinn Féin councillor Thomas O’Reilly told the Irish News: “I would urge motorists to avoid the area while this alert is ongoing. Unfortunately, this will cause disruption for local people with roads being closed, and I hope that this can be resolved quickly and safely.”
