New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer was gifted a Donegal GAA jersey by Taoiseach Simon Harris as the pair met in Chequers on Wednesday.

The leader of the Labour Party has previously spoken of his love for the county after he was pictured playing five-a-side football with a Donegal training jersey.

Sir Kier told the Irish News in 2021 that he bought the jersey after spending part of his honeymoon to wife Victoria in the county in 2007.

Now, just weeks after the election victory which made him PM, he has a fresh jersey as him and his Irish counterpart spoke of ‘resetting’ the relationship between the UK and Ireland.

The pair were pictured sharing a chat over a pint of Guinness at the prime minister’s country house before a dinner on Wednesday evening.

“After I worked in Northern Ireland for five years, my wife and I flew over to Belfast for our honeymoon and drove around the whole of the island of Ireland,” Sir Kier had told the Irish News in 2021.

“As we drove over the border to Donegal, we fell in love with the place and decided to stay a few days there. While there I picked up a Donegal shirt and have been wearing it ever since.”
