The family of Tiarnán Trainor, who died in a quad bike crash near Newry, are fundraising to “give something back” to the emergency services that tried to give him “a chance of survival”.

His mother Majella Campbell said those at the scene of the crash and the medics who treated her son in hospital earlier this month had “tirelessly tried to save Tiarnán’s life”.

She said they “treated us with respect and dignity throughout his time on the roadside and in the hospital”.

Tiarnán (13) was injured in the collision on the Low Road near his Killeavy home on January 3, but died around 24 hours later after being airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

A pupil at St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook, he was described as a “much loved and popular Year 10 pupil” with an “infectious personality”.

Following his death, his mother Majella said she had set up a Go Fund Me page to support the emergency services who had tried to help.

It has raised more than £64,000 just days after it was established.

Writing on the page, Majella said: “Following the tragic loss of our son Tiarnán, we as parents and siblings feel the need to give something back to the emergency services that tirelessly tried to save Tiarnán’s life on the day of his accident.

“As a family we watched an expert team of medical professionals across three different emergency care sectors do everything within their expertise to give Tiarnán a chance of survival.

“Sadly for Tiarnán and us his injuries were too severe.

“They treated us with respect and dignity throughout his time on the roadside and in the hospital.

“The money raised will be given to the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance service, Belfast Hospital for Sick Children Emergency Department and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.”
