Tributes have been paid to a dedicated GAA referee and volunteer from Fermanagh who has been described as a “brilliant friend and clubmate”.

Derrygonnelly official John Murphy died on New Year’s Eve after a battle with illness.

Well-known throughout the county for his efforts with his home club and for refereeing games at all levels, Derrygonnelly Harps said in a statement “there won’t be anyone like him again”.

“On the last day of our centenary year, word reached us - John Murphy has passed away after his illness, a cancer diagnosis typically bravely borne by him,” the club said.

“We are just so sorry for John, one of our best liked and most popular members, a brilliant Harps man in so many different ways. We knew this day was coming, but that does not make it any less difficult and it’s just pure sadness that we feel.

“His contribution to GAA in our area has been huge. He was just a force of nature.

“But maybe more importantly to remember is the kind of person he was: he gave of himself all the time, he was good humoured, he was loyal, he was completely genuine and modest. In the face of his cancer diagnosis, John never once showed anything but a positive attitude towards the situation he was in. He did his very best, always.”

Fermanagh GAA paid tribute to one of its most well-respected referees, who had continued to officiate at games during his illness.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to John’s wife Áine and wider family circle.

“John had refereed for many years representing his Club Derrygonnelly Harps he was well respected throughout the county.

“Although he was continuing to battle his illness he continued to officiate at our games during 2024. He will be sadly missed.”
