Tributes have been paid to renowned traditional fiddle player, Dinny McLaughlin from Donegal who has died at the age of 89.
From Shandrum, near Buncrana, Mr McLaughlin was considered one of the finest exponents of Donegal fiddle music.
He was an accomplished teacher and a well-known collector and composer of Irish music and song. He was credited as the first tutor to many young musicians who went on to find musical fame, including fiddle player, Ciarán Tourish, formerly of Altan.
The Donegal man was also an Irish dance teacher with many of his students winning at feiseanna on national and international levels.
As a musician, he played in the 1970s with the hugely popular Aileach, touring Ireland and beyond and featuring in the RTE flagship, Late, Late Show. His party piece was his ability to dance while playing the fiddle simultaneously.
In a tribute to the late Mr McLaughlin Altan expressed condolences to his family and friends.
The group said: “Dinny McLaughlin was a huge influence on us growing up in Donegal. He was an inspirational teacher, a mentor and most important a true friend.”
Fellow Inishowen musicians, The Henry Girls described Mr McLaughlin as a true musical legend.
The group said: “His contributions to the tradition will never be forgotten here in Inishowen and far beyond. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come and we are so grateful for all he taught us over the years.”
Tribute was also paid by the Cairdeas na BhFidiléirí (fiddler’s friendship) organisation which promotes Donegal fiddle music.
The organisation said Mr McLaughlin’s influence was “enormous”.
Requiem Mass will take place on Friday at St Mary’s church, Cockhill, Buncrana with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
