Two walkers have been rescued from the Mourne Mountains after one was injured in a fall and another took ill.

The separate incidents happened on Saturday, with one walker falling while at the summit of Slieve Bearnagh.

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) was alerted shortly after 11am and a helicopter was sent to the location following a request to the Irish Coast Guard.

“Team members also responded directly to the casualty and after stabilisation, the casualty was winched to the aircraft and transferred to Meelmore Lodge to the additional team members and responding HART Paramedics,” a MMRT spokesperson said.

Later that evening, the rescue team received a report of a walker who had taken ill at the Pollaphuca Gap.

A request was made to the UK Coastguard before the casualty was transferred to a rescue helicopter and flown to hospital
