A woman has appeared in court accused of stabbing her husband in a menopausal “diabetic rage”.

At Newtownards Magistrates Court, Leanne Savage (50) was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on January 6.

The court heard how her teenage son rang 999 just before 11pm to report the incident. Police arrived at the family home on Cauley’s Pipe Road in Castlewellan and found the victim sitting in the kitchen with “a large laceration to his left arm and a puncture would to his shoulder”.

“There was a significant amount of blood on the floor and he had several towels wrapped around the wrist to stem the bleeding but they were soaked with blood,” a police officer told the court.

The victim said he and his wife had been drinking when an argument started and she “picked up the knife and threatened to harm him or herself”.

He tried to disarm her and it was during that struggle the victim was wounded said the officer, adding that according to the victim “there had been previous arguments because she had been drinking and she’s going through the menopause but nothing as serious as this”.

According to the couples’ teenage son, he heard “screaming and shouting” and when he went to investigate, he found his dad stabbed and bleeding.

The 17-year-old told police his mum “has been having diabetic rage for the past year” and the court heard that when Savage was arrested and cautioned, she told police “I’m sorry - I love my husband”.

Granting bail in the sum of £400 with a surety of £400, District Judge Mark Hamill banned Savage from entering Castlewellan or contacting her husband and son and adjourned the case to January 16.
