The world is traumatised by what is happening in Gaza, Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire told a gathering outside the United States Consulate in Belfast on Saturday.

Ms Maguire was among a number of speakers addressing the crowd following the march to the consulate in the south of the city, along with Bernadette McAliskey and Palestinian academic and activist Bayan Haddad.

“The world is traumatised by what is going on in Gaza and we are saddened because we feel what can we do to help the little children and the people of Gaza,” said Ms Maguire.

Ms Maguire asked that people pray during the “beautiful” time of Ramadan for Muslims. She said Muslim people are people and that they are a “wonderful example to the world”.

Many of the marchers carried posters referring to the annual visit of politicians from north and south to Washington.

Marches have been held every week in Belfast since after October 7th when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, killing close to 1,200 people. More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed following Israel’s attack on the territory.

Another march is planned for next Saturday from Writers’ Square to Belfast City Hall.
