Children at this week’s Cúl Camp in Armagh were in ‘jovial form’ on the back of the county’s All-Ireland progress at the weekend.

Every year thousands of children flock to GAA grounds around the country and immerse themselves in Gaelic games for an entire week.

Almost 100 children are attending this week’s camp hosted by Saint Michaels GFC Newtownhamilton.

Camp Supervisor Eoin Carragher there is a great buzz following their home county’s victory on Saturday.

“There are 20 host clubs and it worked well that our week coincided with Armagh’s win at the weekend,” he said.

“The sun is shining the kids are in jovial form.”

The children are given extensive coaching in Gaelic football, hurling and camogie with more than 15 coaching volunteers in attendance.

Mr Carragher said its popularity continues to grow year on year: “98 kids were registered this morning. It’s a number we have seen gradually grow over the years. Some of the bigger clubs can have up to 250 kids registered.

“The Cúl Camp has been running here not long since around the time Armagh last made it to an all-Ireland Final.

“It takes place every summer from the first week of July until the end of August. We have camps right across the county and it’s great to be part of something that helps our young people develop their skills and delivers a social outlet, so they’re not sat in front of the TV all summer.

“Who knows we could have a future Armagh player in the group.”
