Police said the young man, who was aged in his twenties, entered the water in the Lake Road area shortly after 6pm and “sadly encountered difficulties”.

In a statement on Sunday, police said “enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death are ongoing and a post-mortem will take place in due course, however, at present the death is not believed to be suspicious”.

Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Nelson said the “community is shocked and saddened to learn that a man tragically lost his life in Craigavon on Saturday”.

“My first thoughts and condolences are with this man’s family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the emergency services for all their efforts.”
