Roads claim the lives of two young women following collisions

A 22-year-old woman has died of injuries from a crash in Ballymena last week, while a 20-year-old pedestrian was killed in Co Fermanagh

Two young women have lost their lives following collisions in Co Antrim and Co Fermanagh.

A 22-year-old woman seriously injured in a crash in Ballymena last Friday afternoon has died of her injuries, police have said.

The victim has been named as Katya Watson, from the Coleraine area.

She was the driver of a silver Vauxhall Corsa that was involved in the three-car collision on the Lisnevenagh Road shortly before 12.15pm on December 8.

A former pupil of Loreto College in Coleraine, a death notice described her as the “beloved daughter of Eamon and Angelique and loving sister of Gabriella, Francesca, Aurora and twin sister of Lucia”.

The Friends of Loreto past-pupils group said in a social media post: “Katya and her twin sister Lucia attended Loreto from 2013 to 2020.

“Her older sister Francesca was a pupil here from 2009 to 2016. May she rest in Peace.”

She was involved with Co Derry GAA club St Mary’s Slaughtmanus, and a club spokesperson said in a statement: “We express our deepest sympathy to Katya’s extended family and club members.”

They added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to last Friday’s crash, or those with dash-cam footage to come forward.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old woman has been killed after she was struck by a vehicle in Co Fermanagh.

The crash happened on the Belfast Road in Lisbellaw on Wednesday.

Police said the female pedestrian died after the collision, which happened at around 5.50pm.

A 25-year-old man was arrested and remained in custody on Thursday.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have captured dash-cam or other footage in the area at the time to please get in touch by calling 101.

Meanwhile, police are also appealing for information following a serious three-vehicle crash in Co Down.

The collision happened near Loughbrickland on Wednesday at around 5.35pm.



A PSNI spokesperson said: “Officers along with other emergency services attended and one person was taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or to anyone with dash-cam or other footage that could assist with enquiries to contact police on 101.”
