A controversial advert for an A-Level results party by a Co Down nightclub has been condemned by industry chiefs.

The Coach Nightclub in Banbridge was yesterday criticised for the advert which showed an image of a young man lying face down, surrounded by plastic cups.

The advert was branded an "irresponsible" promotion by Colin Neill, Chief Executive of Hospitality Ulster.

Mr Neill said he condemned such promotions "outright".

"We believe the imagery associated with this promotion is unacceptable and have referred it to the Independent Complaints Panel for the industry’s Responsible Retailing Code," he said.

"No promotion should encourage over-consumption or abuse of alcohol and licensees have a responsibility, both legal and moral, to ensure they promote the consumption of alcohol in a responsible way.

"The constant evolution of social media platforms means that there is an even greater need to ensure staff and event promoters are fully aware of the Code and ensure all promotions are checked before publication".

Mr Neill said he had spoken with the chair of the Responsible Retailing Code, Duncan McCausland about the promotion, adding that the issue would be "brought before the Independent Complaints Panel next week".

A spokesman for the Coach Nightclub told BBC NI News it encouraged "responsible alcohol consumption".

He added that the image used was taken from the film, Project X.
