THE mother of tragic Derry nun Sr Clare Crockett is to be laid to rest along side her daughter following her death on Sunday.
Margaret Crockett (58) died at her home at Iona Court in Derry following an illness. Mrs Crockett’s daughter Clare (33) died in April 2016 when the school in which she was teaching music in Playa Prieta in Ecuador was demolished in an earthquake.
A larger than life figure, Sr Clare’s own account of her teenage struggle with alcohol and her ambition to become an actor emerged after her death.
In a message recorded in 2004, the Derry nun revealed she announced her plans to become a nun to friends “with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other”.
Following her death, Sr Clare’s order, The Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother, released a film about her life.
Independent councillor Sean Carr paid tribute last night to Mrs Crockett saying she was hugely respected in her local community but was left heartbroken by her daughter's death.
“Sr Clare’s tragic death broke her heart; she never really got over it,” Mr Carr said.
Mrs Crockett will be buried today at Derry City Cemetery following 10am Requiem Mass at St Columba’s Church, Long Tower.
