A Sinn Féin youth wing poster displaying the slogan 'Brits out' has been condemned.

Queen's Young Unionists expressed anger at the poster at yesterday's Freshers' Fair at Queen's University Belfast.

The slogan was displayed at an Ógra Shinn Féin stall.

Queen's Young Unionists chairman Nathan Redmond, said it was "shameful".

"Queen's has long been regarded as having an image problem as far as students of a Unionist background are concerned, and this shameful and racist display on the Sinn Féin stand at freshers will do nothing to help alleviate that problem," he said.

"The Ulster Unionists have a message for the Sinn Féin youth wing at Queen's who displayed the 'Brits Out' slogan. We are the Brits, and no one will be putting us out, not now, not ever."

Sinn Féin said it noted the UUP had reserved its "outrage for a historical image protesting for the removal of British military installations in Ireland, but managed to remain silent at attempts by British military forces to recruit students at a university freshers day".

A statement released by Queen's University said it has launched an investigation.

"Queen's University is committed to creating and sustaining a harmonious environment free from language or materials that are likely to be provocative or offensive, as reflected by the university’s equality and diversity policy," the statement said.

"In line with the University’s core values, Queen’s expects all of its staff and students treat each other with dignity and respect.

"The university is investigating issues relating to the Students’ Union Freshers’ Fair and the relevant disciplinary measures will be applied as appropriate following the investigation."

In March, Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald was criticised after she posed with a banner reading "England get out of Ireland".

She was photographed with the banner during the New York St Patrick's Day parade.
