Concern is rising in Derry following a third paramilitary-style attack in the city’s Galliagh area within six days.

In the latest incident, a man in his 30s suffered gun shot wounds to both legs when he was attacked at Moss Park at 10pm last night.

Passers-by administered first aid before the victim was removed to Altnagelvin hospital.

It follows the shooting of a man in nearby Brookdale last Wednesday. Police said the man, who was also in his 30s, suffered “life-changing injuries” when he was shot three times in the legs.

The following day a mother-of-three was punched, kicked and beaten with a hammer when she was confronted by a masked gang at her home at Bloomfield Park. The victim’s three young children were in the house at the time.

SDLP councillor, Brian Tierney said people were angry. He said the latest attack would have a lasting psychological impact on the victim.

“It needs to stop and needs to stop now,” Mr Tierney said.

Sinn Féin councillor and head of Derry’s Policing Partnership, Sandra Duffy said the attacks were not acceptable.

“As chair of the PCSP (policing partnership) and elected representative for Ballyarnett, I know that people are disgusted and angry at last night’s shooting. Again, this great area is in the news for the wrong reasons.”
