A man has suffered potentially life-changing injuries in a second paramilitary-style shooting in Derry in two days.

He was shot in the leg in what police described as a "barbaric" attack outside a house in the Creggan Heights area shortly before 7.45pm on Friday.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, where police said his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A car was also set on fire at the scene.

A man in his 30s was also shot in the leg in the Southway area on Wednesday night in what police described as "a paramilitary-style assault".

Detective Sergeant Gavin McLaughlin described the latest shooting as "barbaric" and said it bore "all the hallmarks of a paramilitary-style assault".

He said: "Those responsible for this criminal act do not represent the interests of this community, nor do they contribute anything to it.

"They do it to try and exert influence, or gain control of those they claim to represent."

The attack was condemned by Sinn Féin MLA Karen Mullan, who said there was "no place for guns or this type of activity on our streets".

“This is the second shooting this week and at a time when our hospitals are under severe pressure and people are dying as a result of the pandemic, it's the last thing that the people of Derry want to see," she said.

“Anyone with information on this attack should bring it forward to the police.”

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood also tweeted: "The people of Derry do not want this. They must stop terrorising our community now."

Police can be contacted on 101 or via Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
