AN advisor to former Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness was due to be selected to replace outgoing Derry councillor Mickey Cooper last night.

Conor Heaney, who was also a special adviser to Michelle Gildernew and Michelle O'Neill while they were agriculture ministers and to Chris Hazzard at the Department for Infrastructure, was reported by the Derry Journal to be the "only... name in the frame" at the Sinn Féin selection convention.

Mr Heaney was part of the party's negotiating team during the Stormont House and Fresh Start agreements.

Mr Cooper announced earlier this month that he would step down from the Foyleside seat on Derry City and Strabane District Council "due to growing work and party commitments".
