LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer has revealed that a Dongeal GAA top he was pictured in was bought while on honeymoon in Ireland.
He last night told The Irish News that he purchased the jersey after visiting Donegal and falling "in love with the place".
The former barrister married wife Victoria, a solicitor, in 2007. They have two children.
On Monday, he was spotted playing football wearing a jersey that featured the Donegal GAA logo on it. He posted a photograph of himself on social media wearing the top as he took part in five-a-side football match.
He wrote: "Finally back in training! Still got a few months before Gareth Southgate announces the squad for the Euros".
The 58-year-old shared the image of him in action as the UK has allowed amateur games to take place again from Monday.
When asked last night if he had links to Donegal, the Labour leader said he had visited the county with his wife.
"After I worked in Northern Ireland for five years, my wife and I flew over to Belfast for our honeymoon and drove around the whole of the island of Ireland," he said.
"As we drove over the border to Donegal, we fell in love with the place and decided to stay a few days there.
"While there I picked up a Donegal shirt and have been wearing it ever since."
The image provoked numerous comments from GAA fans intrigued by the jersey.
One Twitter user wrote: "If Gareth Southgate won't have you and you don't get your place on the House of Commons footie squad, there might be a place in the Donegal GAA veterans team at left back for you in the not too distant future."
