WORK is taking to place to remove a 20-foot peace line from the front of homes at a north Belfast interface.

The security barrier on North Queen Street is being replaced by a low brick wall and fencing under the plans which are expected to be completed by late summer.

North Belfast is marked by dozens of peace lines, including in Alexandra Park - the only public park in western Europe to have such a structure.

North Belfast Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee said it was "great to see the progress of work today to remove these interface barriers around homes in the New Lodge".

"The single most important thing is that residents remain safe and the replacement of this old style physical infrastructure protecting homes with modern and more welcoming measures will vastly improve people's quality of life."

He said when they were installed some 20 years ago "interface problems were at their height including homes being attacked with pipe bombs".

"We hope to see that long awaited improvement in long suffering residents quality of life."

Last month, Kate Clarke of Duncairn Community Partnership, which has worked with householders on the proposals, said residents were "very upbeat" about the changes.

"It's good to get them back to a wee bit of normality."
