A child aged under two was among a group of people forced to flee their homes in Belfast after they were targeted in race hate attacks.

Two families, including other children, fled their homes after the attacks on Thursday evening in an area straddling north and west Belfast.

It is understood the victims are Romanian.

It is the latest in a series of attacks in the area in recent weeks.

Police say that windows were smashed in a property and a car was torched at Forth Parade around 8.40pm.

Windows in a second car parked on the same street were also smashed.

Minutes later a man entered a house in nearby Woodvale Avenue where a number of windows were broken.

DUP councillor Brian Kingston condemned the attacks.

"We are appalled that these attacks have occurred overnight against two houses in the Ainsworth area, including the burning of a vehicle, and coming just a week after another property was attacked in the area," he said.

"Whatever the motivation, we condemn these attacks without equivocation."

SDLP representative Paul Doherty said no-one should be forced to live in fear.

"It is sickening that these hate crimes were carried out on the streets of west Belfast," he said.

"The people behind these vile actions do not represent the people of this area which is one of the most welcoming communities in the whole of the north.

"These families with young children have been forced to flee their homes as a result of these incidents.

“Nobody should fear an attack because of their background, it is deeply disheartening and disturbing that something like this has happened within our community. “

PSNI inspector David McBride said the incidents are being treated as hate crimes.

"These were very distressing incidents for the occupants of the properties, which included a number of young children.

"At this stage, we are treating these incidents as racially motivated hate crimes.”

A spokeswoman last night added that “there is no information at this stage to suggest that there was any paramilitary involvement”.

The latest attacks come after two separate properties owned by a Portuguese woman were recently targeted in what police described as "racially motivated" attacks.

The victim spoke to the Irish News after her house in the Woodvale Avenue area was attacked by up to nine masked men armed with hammers.

The shocked woman revealed how she was also forced to flee her previous home at Ainsworth Avenue, in the Shankill Road area of west Belfast, weeks earlier.
